Belgian Science Policy

The Belgian Science Policy is a structural partner of the BMDC. It is the official body that manage the Belgian oceanographic vessel Belgica and that finances a large part of the oceanographic research in Belgium. It has financed the IDOD project (1997-2002) that lead to the IDOD information system. The OSTC continues this supporting action by providing means and mechanisms to ensure a continuous feeding of our databases with the results of on-going research projects.

SeaDataNet

SeaDataNet (2006-2011) aims at developping an efficient distributed Pan-European Marine Data Management Infrastructure for managing large and diverse data sets. The objective is to network the existing professional data centres of 35 countries, active in data collection, and provide integrated databases of standardized quality on-line.

IOC/IODE

MUMM is a designated National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) within the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Data Exchange programme of the IOC (the Agency of the UNESCO dedicated to oceanographic matters). As such, the BMDC endorses the obligations of facilitating data exchange within that international network and members of the BMDC participate actively in discussions dealing with the management of oceanographic data at the worldwide level.

ICES

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea is the oldest international body dealing with oceanographic data collection. Amongst its numerous activities it is, for instance, in charge of collecting the national data relevant for the monitoring programme of the OSPAR convention. The BMDC collects, validates, comments and transfers the corresponding data for Belgium on a yearly basis.
