Datasets

The European Directory of Marine Environmental Datasets (EDMED) was initiated in 1991 by the British Oceanographic Data Centre within the EC-MAST framework. MUMM participated in that initial project.

EDMED has established itself as a de facto European standard for indexing and searching datasets relating to the marine environment. It covers a wide range of disciplines and is a high level inventory, describing both datasets and data holding centres.

On behalf of the European Union, the inventory was revised and upgraded in 2000 and a brand new search interface has been implemented. MUMM, and its BMDC, participated again as national contact point for Belgium in the Sea-Search project.

At present, EDMED describes more than 2800 datasets from over 570 data holding centres across Europe.
