Charts indicating suspended sediment concentration
(see our OceanColour web site for an archive
of satellite images) produced on the basis of satellite imagery clearly
show areas of high turbidity along the Belgian coast and at the mouth
of the Thames. Using a colour scale, the chart shows the calculated
value of the concentration (from blue for low concentrations to red
for high values). The SeaWiFS pictures have a ground resolution of
approximately 1.1km and cover large areas. This chart is limited to
part of the North Sea. |

This is a chart showing suspended sediment
concentrations produced on the basis of a SPOT picture. These pictures
typically cover small areas, but in return have a ground resolution
of 10 to 20 metres. It is therefore possible to obtain fairly precise
local information. |

Illustration of the precision of certain
satellite pictures, in this case part of a SPOT picture. The port
of Zeebrugge, the different uses to which the ground is put, variations
in the surface of the sea and ships can be clearly distinguished.
