International undertakings
A wide range of matters relating to the protection of the
marine environment are settled by means of international cooperation.
MUMM plays an active part in the bodies responsible for the following
international agreements and conventions:

On December 3rd, 2002, the Scheldt
and Meuse international agreements have been
concluded. Belgium is a Contracting Party to these agreements.
The agreements
implement
coordination obligations at the level of the hydrographic
district as foreseen
by article 13 of the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/CE). |

Conferences for the protection of the North Sea. The
fifth reunion was held in Bergen, Norway, March 20-21
2002. |

United Nations Open-Ended
Informal Consultative Process established by the General
Assembly in its Resolution 54/33 in order to facilitate
the annual review by the Assembly of developments in ocean
affairs. |

European Union:
In the context of the European Union, various instruments
(directives and decisions) have also been issued that have a direct or
indirect impact on the quality of the marine environment and in which
MUMM is involved.
