International undertakings

A wide range of matters relating to the protection of the marine environment are settled by means of international cooperation. MUMM plays an active part in the bodies responsible for the following international agreements and conventions:

INTERNATIONAL UNDERTAKINGS
OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (Paris 2 September 1992) (approved by the law of 11 May 1995, Belgian Official Journal 31 January 1998/Second edition)
BONN Agreement for cooperation in dealing with pollution of the North Sea by oil and other harmful substances, and Annex (Bonn, 13 september 1993), approved by the law of June 16, 1989 , Belgian Official Journal December 28 1989, Coordinated text after modifications, Belgian Official Journal October 3 1996)
LC Convention on the prevention of marien pollution by dumping of wastes and other matter (1972) (approved by the law December 20, 1984, Belgian Official Journal October 22, 1985).
MARPOL
International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (London, 1973) and the Protocol of 1978 to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (London, 1978, 17th of February) (approved by the law January 17, 1984, Belgian Official Journal May 24, 1984).
ASCOBANS Agreement on the conservation of small cetaceans of the Baltic and North Sea) (New York, 1992, March 17th). Belgian Official Journal october 20, 1993
SCHELDT / MEUSE On December 3rd, 2002, the Scheldt and Meuse international agreements have been concluded. Belgium is a Contracting Party to these agreements. The agreements implement coordination obligations at the level of the hydrographic district as foreseen by article 13 of the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/CE).
NSC International Conferences for the protection of the North Sea. The fifth reunion was held in Bergen, Norway, March 20-21 2002.
UNICP United Nations Open-Ended Informal Consultative Process established by the General Assembly in its Resolution 54/33 in order to facilitate the annual review by the Assembly of developments in ocean affairs.

European Union:

In the context of the European Union, various instruments (directives and decisions) have also been issued that have a direct or indirect impact on the quality of the marine environment and in which MUMM is involved.
