The 'EEZ' act This law (Act of 22 April 1999 relating to Belgian's exclusive economic zone in the North Sea, Belgian Official Journal of 10 July 1999, see text, PDF, 10pp, 172KB, French and Dutch only) aims to extend sovereign rights in a marine zone beyond the territorial waters and adjacent to these, for the purpose of exploration and exploitation and the conservation and management of natural resources, both living and non-living, in the waters above the seabed and in the seabed and its substratum, and in relation to other activities involving the economic exploration and exploitation of the zone, such as generating energy from water, currents and the wind. The 'sideward boundary' is defined in bilateral agreements (PDF, 1p., 62KB, French and Dutch only) with neighbouring countries. |
